Parenting Strategies

In addition to my work with middle school and high school-age teens, I work with parents of children of all ages on effective strategies and interventions to address troubling or difficult behavior and dynamics. This work can happen in conjunction with counseling for the child or with one or more parent alone. My parenting strategy work is influenced by the material I offer in my parent educations presentations and workshops, but in individual parent sessions the strategies can be tailored to a family’s specific situation or circumstances.

This work is often short-term and can be scheduled on an as-needed basis. I can also provide referrals to various resources in the Bay Area, as well as on the Internet, to help parents get input from a variety of sources.

The following books are great resources for parenting teens:

  • Michael Riera, Uncommon Sense for Parents of Teenagers
  • Adele Faber, How to Talk So Kids Will Listen and How to Listen So Kids Will Talk
  • Lynn Ponton, The Romance of Risk
  • Lynn Ponton, The Sexual Lives of Teenagers

And these books are great resources for parenting young children:

  • Diane Ehrensaft, Spoiling Childhood
  • Ann LaForge, What Really Happens in School
  • Daniel J. Kindlon, Raising Cain: Protecting the Emotional Life of Boys
  • Wendy Mogel, The Blessing of a Skinned Knee
